carrying my laptop to Europe?
I'm carrying my laptop to France, and I was wondering how am I going to charge it? My laptop was bought in Canada, so it has a different current from over in Europe. What do i have to buy? A converter would work? Also I've heard somewhere that if you plug your appliance into a socket that uses a different current, that it could damage it? I plan to carry my iPod and laptop or netbook, what should I buy? Thanks

Answer 1 :
An electric converter is all you need to buy. Don't forget to bring your charging cords! Have fun..France is a wonderful destination.
Answer 2 :
Most all laptop (and camera and ipod) chargers work on any international voltage supply. Check the instructions to be sure, look for something like "110 to 240 VAC 50/60Hz". You do NOT need a converter. Then all you need is a plug converter, or a few of them in your case, that you can get in any drug store or hardware store for a few dollars. I've been on quite a few trips to Europe, and I have a bunch of plug converters that work just fine. .
Answer 3 :
the voltage in france is 220. In the us it is 110, not sure about canada. So if you plug your appliances in they will break. You can buy converters for your ipod and computer.
Answer 4 :
You can easily buy an adapter from amazon or some stores in town to clip onto the end of the power chord.
Answer 5 :
As someone else told you, your laptop and iPod will both work here without a voltage converter. All you need is the plug adapter. Something like this will be fine: http://www.buy.com/prod/us-to-europe-eu-travel-plug-electric-power-outlet-adapter-converter/q/listingid/75271989/loc/101/213645860.html You can find them at places like Radio Shack, Walmart, Target, Brookstones, airport shops and most luggage stores. I have 5 laptops, several cameras, and other devices here and have never needed more than this. Things like hair driers, electric shavers and other appliances that may not be dual voltage could need a voltage converter - I just buy those kinds of things here.

My laptop is almost at it's limit?
My laptop is almost at it's limit?
I have my laptop for 3-4 years. I think after 1.5 years that the battery died, meaning I can't use the laptop for long after the plug has been removed. Sometimes the laptop got really hot after short usage but after I reinstall windows on it, the heat problem was gone. I think I reinstalled windows on my laptop for like 6 times in the last 2 years. A problem I've had with it is that sometimes when the laptop got too hot the screen froze and I needed to hold the on button to shut it off. And when I try to use it when it's really hot the screen would stay black. Until last week I was able to watch movies on my laptop without any 'real' problems. But after 1 week to France my laptop started failing again. It wasn't used that week. And now I can't even reinstall windows without it failing. Can someone explain to me what happened to my laptop? Also what causes the heat problem? Is there a way to fix it? I don't have the money the buy a new one so don't bother telling me to buy a new one. edit: I can still start my laptop after it's cooled down. Then I think I have like 20-30 minutes before it gets too hot again.

is there like a cooling fan u could get?
Answer 2 :
For sure, get yourself a laptop cooler... they are about $18 and are powered by the laptop's USB port. I always use one even though my new laptop doesn't have a heat problem. You also should blow the dust out of your laptop with canned air... cheap. Even if your laptop is on it's last legs, you'll have these items for your next one. I assume that you keep your laptop on a flat surface cos anything else may be interfering with it's air circulation and contributing to its overheating.. Best of luck.

I need an adapter and a converter to go to France?
Okay so I will be studying abroad over in France and I am really confused about what converter and adapter to get? its just confusing! I need help? Can anyone help me out...? and what does this mean...Perfect for Non Dual-Voltage Laptop and Notebook Computers.?

Answer 1 :
You can check this site. It provides many kinds of adapter. You can find some you need. http://www.sunnygain.com
Answer 2 :
A Non Dual-Voltage computer is one that runs on 120V only (USA). The converter you need is one that converts 240V to 120V. The differences in frequency (60Hz in US vs 50HZ in Europe) shouldn't matter for a computer power supply. Just make sure that the converter is rated for at least the Watts the computer draws. Also pick up a set of outlet adapters from Radio Shack or equivalent as AC outlets in Europe differ & vary. .

I will travel on Continental to France in a few days. Do they allow backpacks/messengers as carry on luggage?
I have searched Contiental's website and I did not find anything specific to carry ony luggage - back packs and messenger bags. I am traveling light and I am trying to avoid the delay of waiting for my bags. It is a standard sized Jansport back pack and a regular sized messenger bag/laptop size. Thanks!

Answer 1 :
Yes - you are allowed 1 carry on which would be your back pack and 1 personal item - which would be your messenger bag
Answer 2 :
You may want to call the Airline, but I am sure that you can take a backpack as carry-on luggage. Have a nice trip.
Answer 3 :
If you're not carrying a bomb, then its ok, they'll let you in.

Is an American iPod good for France?
Is an American iPod good for France?
I won a new black iPod Video 60GB. Because I won a 20GB iPod 2 years ago, and I just bought a new laptop, and I don't work right now, I prefer to sell it on eBay for $300. But then, I'm going soon to France in vacations and it sells 300 euros ($392) on eBay France. So I rather sell it on eBay France. The problem is that I don't know if an american iPod would be good for a frenchman. I didn't open the box, I keep it sealed (proof that it's new). On the box, I see that it includes: iPod, Earphones, USB 2.0 cable, and iTunes. But in my 20GB iPod box, it included also a power adapter and a Quick Start guide. So in that case, that would have been difficult to sell it in France because it's not the same outlet and the quick start guide was not in french. Do you think that there is no problem in selling my iPod Video 60GB in France? Even if I think it's ok from what I read on the box, I ask here so I'm sure. It's strange that Apple don't ship power adapter anymore! I think some people didn't understand my question. On the box of the 60GB video iPod, it doesn't say that it include a power adapter. So really, it's not included in the box? if yes, then the french user would have to buy one, as if he bought a french 60 GB iPod. People who have a 60GB iPod and who know what was in their box, should reply only.

Buy world power adapter from Apple store and you dont have to worry about power when it comes to your iPods.
Answer 2 :
it wont wrk in france ..they dun hav the same outletz n stuf like we do so yeah itz nawt gunna wrk in FrancE
Answer 3 :
An iPod charges when plugged into the computer, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Answer 4 :
Hummn there is no power adapter usually with an IPOD, so you don't really care about outlets... It charges with the USB connection anyway... I bought 2 Ipods in New York last year before coming back to France and they work flawlessly, of course. Go ahead, give it a try.

Do i need to sign papers?? iM flying out of Heathrow P.s i wont use it on the aircrat. i want to use it at the destination on holiday

Answer 1 :
im pretty sure u can bring it as long as it goes through the scan it should be fine
Answer 2 :
Yes you can, carry on and no you only need to sign papers if you wanted it in checked luggage.
Answer 3 :
You always see people on planes with laptops! The only thing that may be of concern, is that you may need to stop using it during the flight if you're using wireless internet or anything like that. The attendants may ask you to put it away or stow it if there is a problem. Call British Airways and ask them. They'll be able to quell any major concerns.
Answer 4 :
Yes, you are allowed to bring it with you. :) On British Airways, you are allowed to bring one standard-sized bag and one laptop-sized bag, handbag or briefcase.
Answer 5 :
yes
Answer 6 :
Yes, absolutely - only about a million people a day fly with laptops around the world. And, you can use it on board if you want to, after the cabin crew says it is OK to turn on electronic devices. It is advisable to turn off any wireless capability if you can. But the crew does not go around with an antenna looking for devices that are broadcasting a signal.

Can I plug my US Xbox 360 in in France?
I plug my US laptop in in France because the transformer allows it. However I am not sure about the Xbox 360 US electric current is 110v French electric current is 230v

Even if you got the correct transformer, it still won't help you at all. The US and Europe use totally different TV systems, a French PAL or SECAM TV would not be able to "decode" the NTSC signal from your Xbox. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_television_systems
Answer 2 :
probobly
Answer 3 :
o.O LOL :P TV's nowadays are MULTISYSTEM HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA so dont worry abt the TV unless ur TV is OLD abt the voltage.....if ur 110 laptop works in 220france the itll surely work ^^

Can my laptop read european wireless networks?
I will be going to France this summer and I will be needing to do some work there with my computer. Do you think I will be able to see French Wireless Networks?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
the simple answer is yes you will. hope you have a nice time.
Answer 2 :
That will depend on what kind of wireless card you have. If the card is CDMA, then no. If the card is GSM, it will depend on what frequency the card reads. If the laptop is using wi-fi and it is available where you are, then it will work as this is a more universal technology. Hope that helps.

Will it? If it can, will it also have access on another country, like Morocco, france, etc.? Are there any plans that let you have internet connection anywhere you go, or at least in the same state? Thanks!

Answer 1 :
You have to be within range of a wireless network, or "WiFi hotspot". A lot of places offer their networks for free use.
Answer 2 :
You can get an internet connection anywhere. Much like a telephone connection, they are everywhere.
Answer 3 :
There are several ways to get online with a laptop away from home. The most common today is WiFi. If you have a WiFi card, you can usually get online in hotels (sometimes needing to get a password from the front desk, and other times no password is needed), at many gas stations, in airports, coffee shops, even some McDonald's. Another way is with a dial-up access number from your current ISP. Many ISP's allow you to dial in from almost anywhere. You might have a limit to this, however, like 20 hours per month or so. A third way is with a data cable connecting to your cellphone. The cheapest cellphones (that your provider gives you for free) often will not be capable of doing this, however. Check with your cellphone provider, or a local cellphone store, if this is something that interests you. Additional charges may also apply, and they may be based upon how many KB you download in a month. You may or may not have any luck in foreign countries. That is not something with which I am familiar, except that WiFi is surely also prevalent in many 1st world foreign countries, such as England, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, etc. etc. etc. There are probably not any plans that are "state-specific". Then there are even some truly exotic methods, such as carrying around a satellite dish with you, and pointing it at a satellite to get an internet connection. Some stormchasers and the military do this, because they find themselves in places where there is no other option for getting online. There are also a couple companies that provide satellite internet connections with much smaller antennas, rather than having to lug a dish around, but the baud rate (connection speed) is quite slow, like 9600 bps.
Answer 4 :
There are a number of ways to have internet access far away from home: 1) If your laptop has an internal modem (most laptop have) plug your laptop into a phone line. You can set the laptop for dial up connection. From control panel, then internet connection. 2) If your laptop has Wi-Fi (wireless internet modem), if can try to wonder around to see if there are wireless access points nearby that the signal is strong enough. Try selecting the signal by clicking the wireless icon that appears in the bottom start bar near the right corner.. If you are lucky that the access point has no security, then you can use the internet right away. 3) In the other country, you can use 1) to dial-up to your internet service provider. That is expensive because it is long distance call. 4) Your Internet service provider may have Internet rooming service that you can arrange before you go (with payment, stating the period that you want to have the rooming service) then go can go to the country and dial up a local phone number to connect the internet. 5) Some places, like the airports, have internet access free of change. You can connect by plugging your RJ45 LAN plug to there system and get access, or alternatively use a infra led link to access. 6) In some country like US, the Internet service provider are so keen to get business that they put some set-up CD in motels and hotels. You can set up and have a period of time free of charge. 7) If you are desperate, go to the Internet cafe. They probably allow you to connect your desktop to the Internet as well. Hope that help

Answer 1 :
Ok based on when the Delta flights to Paris leave out of ATL here's what you're looking at. ORD-ATL will be an MD-88 if you're on the 1:20 pm flight to ATL. If you're on the 11:31 am flight, it's a CRJ-900 regional jet operated by SkyWest as Delta Connection. Neither plane has an in-flight entertainment system of any kind, no audio, etc. No food will be served. ATL-CDG will be a 767-400 with 41 seats in BusinessElite and 200 seats in coach. It will have overhead TV screens in coach for the movies. One movie will be shown to Paris and two will be shown on the return to ATL. You will be served dinner about an hour after takeoff (about the time you level off more or less) and a light breakfast about an hour before you land in Paris. Laptop plug-in systems are available on 767-400s in both classes of service. The adapter cord is not provided. You will need to purchase one.
Answer 2 :
Look on your reservations and it should tell you what kind of plane you will be on. You can then go to seatguru.com and get information on that plane. The plugs for laptops are usually only in First Class and priority seating.
Answer 3 :
check directly with DELTA, but you must have paid a bundle and you will have wasting several hours on your trip, many airlines have non-stop flights from Chicago to Paris

Will my laptop fit in the hotel room safe in Paris?
I'm trying to decide if I should bring my laptop to Paris. We're staying at the Renaissance Paris Hotel Le Parc Trocadero 55-57 Avenue Raymond Poincare Paris, 75116 France Does anyone know if the laptops will fit in the room safe? It's about 14.5 inches by 11 inches. THANKS!!!!!

Answer 1 :
Hotel safes are usually around... Internal Height x 7-1/2 x 16-9/16 x 11-13/16 / W x D x x 11-13/16. If you need to carry it with you...try this pack...http://www.bestcomputerbags.net/product_info.php?cPath=5&products_id=12.
Answer 2 :
My experience in Europe is that the old world hotels either don't have safes or the safes are pretty small. The big international chains, like Hilton, Best Western or Holiday Inn, will probably have a safe large enough to accommodate your computer. You can email the concierge at your particular hotel and ask. If you're worried about your data, back everything up on USB key before leaving and leave the key at home in your own home safe. Then take a USB key with you so that you can back up any new documents as you go. For recovery of the cost of the computer itself in case of theft, look into some inexpensive one-time travel insurance. There are companies that will cover a computer while you travel. Hope this helps and bon voyage!

How should i connect my toshiba laptop to internet (wifi)?
right now my sisters laptop has gone a bit haywire and now we can't go on the internet anymore i live in france and i cant find out how to connect it because it keeps on saying " sorry but we can't connect you to livebox because a problem occured" so if anyone know how to fix it please help thank you =)

Answer 1 :
If in France, they may be using other channels for wireless than North America. Depending on your wireless adapter, you may have issues connecting. Most modern wireless adapters should connect to European wireless, but slightly older models may have issues with it... If you can get someone to check the wireless access point (router??), they may be able to verify that the channel is 1 or 6. If they are at channel 12 or 13, you may not be able to connect... If it's not the wireless connection (you can surf the internet ok...), then something in the livebox is detecting your French IP address, and may have issues with it if it thinks you are a North American customer...

How to connect to the internet in Paris, France?
How to connect to the internet in Paris, France?
I'm going over to visit a relative for a few days in Paris, but she does not have any internet. I know here in the states you can buy laptop sticks in which you pay a subscription and can access the internet through that- is there anything similar in Paris? I have to be able to access my emails/work while I'm there, so it's vital that I be able to connect to the internet from her house. Any suggestions?

Answer 1 :
There are many internet cafes in Paris, which are your best bet, since public networks tend to be iffy, though some of the local libraries have them.
Answer 2 :
Most home wireless networks come already password protected from the provider, so it's hard to find open wifi networks, but now many bars and cafés will post a "Free WIFI" sign or "WIFI Gratuit". If you order a drink you can normally ask for the code to get on the internet and use it for as long as you like (within reason). Internet cafés are also common and can range from 0.50€/hour to 2€/hour

Answer 1 :
You'd probably be cheaper to buy a dell printer in france and dump it, or sell it, after a year. Look at the power on the bottom of the printer. This is the output power you would need from your voltage converter. The fact thta this power is delivered at a different voltage does not matter.
Answer 2 :
Most of these type of gadgets use switch-mode power convertors which can handle a wide range of input voltages. Look at the box to see what the acceptable voltage range is. Chances are you will only need a plug adapter.

I bought a new Torshiba Laptop in NZ this year, I have since changed the region to France, but I would like to change it back to NZ and I have forgotten how I did it :S Thanks

Answer 1 :
Click on the "Computer icon: on your desktop or "computer" in the start menu. A window opens, showing all your drives. Right click your DVD drive and click on Properties. On the next window choose the Hardware tab. Highlight your DVD drive and click on properties. On the next window, choose the DVD Region tab and change your region. I believe there is a limit to the number of changes you are allowed. It's either 5 or 7 changes. So, be frugal with your changes.

What are the power converter requirements to use my laptop in Europe?
Dell D410. Going to Czech Republic, France, and Spain. I've read various things on the Internet. Some say to use a converter, some say don't. And I cannot find anything on the Dell site that answers the question. Have you done this? If so, what is the safest, easiest way? Thanks for the answer. Somebody here suggested I chat with Dell online. They gave me the answer. (No converter needed, just an adapter.)

Been to Europe 6 years. The normal power situation is double.over there. 110 here, 220 there. Power converters or adapters are essential if your laptop doesn't have one. They are actually inexpensive and readily available over there.
Answer 2 :
bon voyage u'r notebook & power adapter are built to operate globally all u gotta get is a plug adapter kit, as below http://www.ciao.co.uk/APC_International_Notebook_Plug_Adapter_Kit_C6_3_Prong_Power_cable_kit__5634012 the reason being that the power plug / sockets in different countries are shaped different true voltage levels are different, but all u got to do is read the power adapter specifications which should read 100 - 250 volts input, 50 / 60 hz your output is constant 19.5 volts dc, irrespect of input voltage check it out & let me know ...

? I love the journey to the south of France. Have you considered a book? Bit old-fashioned, but you never know, anything's worth trying once.
Answer 2 :
You do not say how you are travelling, car, train or plane. Just a few suggestions: Sudoku, or crossword compendiums. Magazines on your particular interest or containing various brain teasers and word games. Guide book about the region which you can read to decide where you want to go for trips, excursions or visits. Pack of cards to play patience or other game. Ipod to listen to music or prerecorded programmes. Pocket camera just in case you see something that you want to snap from the window if travelling by car/train. A book that will really capture your attention and which you find unable to put down.

Answer 1 :
go to any stores like the source or best buy or other similar stores and ask them what they would recommend based on where you are travelling and what items you plan to plug in. I went to the source when I went to France and they sold me a plug adapter that would work in europe
Answer 2 :
You can buy it when you arrive in Paris from any local convenient store or just borrow from your hotel reception desk. No problem!
Answer 3 :
Most of modern electronics use dual voltage/dual frequency adapters... There is a big possibility that both your gadgets might work on European grid. If you take small plastic adapter (on your power supply cable) where S/N is located, there should say something like: 100-240V, 50-60Hz then you're set. If it's just 110V and 60Hz then you really need power adapter. In case it is dual, then you only need adapter plug (something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8E449-Universal-Travel-Adapter/dp/B00008O393/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204300606&sr=1-1 You can also buy great quality for I think $20 aboard any planes flying overseas as part of duty-free-shopping. If you do need power converter, 110 to 220V this is pretty good one, works both way - downgrading/upgrading voltage. Note that frequency doesn't change but small appliance shouldn't feel different freq. http://www.amazon.com/jWIN-JA-V50-Watt-Travel-Converter/dp/B00013BN2K/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204300606&sr=1-5 Hope it helped...

My laptop to use wifi in europe
do i need some kind of plan for my laptop to use wifi in europe?
I'm going to Ireland, UK and France next month...and someone was mentioning data plans for your LAPTOP...do i really need that? In my books it said that there are plenty of wifi spots in cafes and hostels and stuff like that in europe...can't i just connect to those providers? Or do i need some kind of international internet plan? Couldn't reach anyone who could answer me on this.

Answer 1 :
First off, Wireless cards (WIFI) on laptops cannot receive internet through cell phone data plans. You are talking about 2 different things. WIFI is from a Wireless router (usually) that your laptop can use when you connect to the router. (think wifi spots in cafes, starbucks, etc) Data plans are used when you plug a data receiver into your USB port that reads Cell phone signals. In this way you would buy it from a cellphone provider and use their data services like your cell phone would. These are 2 seperate things, which make your question... null.
Answer 2 :
There are a lot of free wi fi spots all over where you are traveling. If you need a constant connection go to any phone store once you get to wherever you are traveling to and you can buy a prepaid data usb device. I suggest if you absolutely do not need a laptop, go with an iPad or iPod touch, you can do all your emailing, skyping, gaming in a lot more portable package. Less of a problem if the thing gets damaged or stolen.

Buying laptop in another country and get it mailed?
Buying laptop in another country and get it mailed?
Hello, I'm living in France now and I'm searching for a nice laptop, and the best that has come up to me is one hp model that's only sold in the U.S. Much much better than the French models priced in euro...I want to order and deliver one to my friends in the U.S. and have them ship it for me, but worry that it might be illegal and cause trouble for them. Please help me reach a solution. Thanks a lot.

Answer 1 :
It's perfectly legal to ship internationally as long as you pay the postage. One thing that I would make sure to check though is the voltage rating.

How much can i take on air france (QUICK)?
Im flying from Dc to Paris on air france and i was wondering how much i can take? I have about 11 pounds for carryon (mabye +5 cuz im taking a laptop) and i have like 52 pounds (24kg) for baggage, is that ok or is it too much? I checked the site but didnt find what i was looking for, anyone know how much i can take, i leave soon so a quick answer would be nice!

Answer 1 :
If you could find the information on-line (it is there) just give them a phone call. AF will give you the correct answer.
Answer 2 :
don't worry about the carry on weight, it's the size that matters, they are usually pretty good about it on international flights. You maybe a little over on checked baggage, but again they are usually a bit flex on it. If you do get a problem, move some weight around between your carry on an checked baggage.
Answer 3 :
Your carry on weight shouldnt be a problem....the only rule is that if you were to put it in the overhead compartment you alone have to do it - you cant aska flight attendent to ask you. (Dont ask why, but Ive been yelled at when I was moving to and from Geneva). As for the the baggage itself, it needs to be 50 pounds(20 kg) or less...otherwise you pay 50$ if its over weight.

Is there a laptop charger on the planes?
Is there a laptop charger on the planes?
Hi all, I'd love to know if anyone of you have traveled to France through "AIR FRANCE" and if there's some kind of "plane charger" for my laptop, I have the cables and I can charge it whilem driving, but if there's nothing on the plane, I'd rather kill myself in that 14 hour flight.
Other - France - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
No, there's no charger on planes. When you kill yourself please try not to stain too much the seats, blood is sooooo hard to clean up and it is not very pleasing for the next traveller seating at that seat. Or you can buy a second battery and charge it before the flight.
Answer 2 :
go to seatguru.com identify the airline, then plane type you will be on. The site reviews the seats and identifies which ones have power ports. Then call the airline to confirm what type of power they have 12 volt, 120, 220 etc

Do I need a converter for my 220 Volt laptop computer?
Do I need a converter for my 220 Volt laptop computer?
I am visiting Georgia from France, and have my 220 volt laptop computer. Do I need a converter, or just an adapter? I know 110 volt laptops don't need a converter to go to france.
Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
it depends. if you're laptop is 220 volts and the outlets in france are 110 volts, then you'll need a converter. ask someone who knows how many volts do they have on outlets in france.
Answer 2 :
look at your current power supply, it should show input power as 100-240v. if it shows that you will only need the plug adapter to plug it into the us outlet
Answer 3 :
Believe me, you need a converter. Unless somewhere on the comp that can be switch from 220 to 110 do not, I repeat do not use a adaptor. I did that when staying in Europe a few months ago and burned out my comp's electrical box.
Answer 4 :
To be safe, better have a step-down transformer. You can buy one of these from hardware stores. These things "convert" 220V appliances so that they could be plugged into a 110V outlet. If the adapter has a voltage rating of 220V, plug it into the transformer and plug the transformer into a 110V outlet.

Answer 1 :
Get an ac adapter so you can plug it in in France. Bring a network cable just in case there is no wireless access.
Answer 2 :
Take your laptop in its own bag as a cabin baggage. Remember to take it out from the bag in every X-ray/security port. If you have more than 2 batteries its handy... if you have headphones its handy also so you dont disturb people on the plane. Mmm im out of ideas hehe hope it helps.
Answer 3 :
Before your hook up your laptop in FRANCE ...check with Hotel's Customers Service- to find out what you have to do so you can operate your LOP TOP safe.
Answer 4 :
If you have a laptop lock, it is good to take it with you, so you can lock it to a solid object when you leave it in your hotel room. And take your laptop with you as often as you can to diminish the risk even more. You will need a plug adapter, but most likely your charger can take 230 volt (check it, it will say 100/240 or 110/230 or so on it,) if not, you might just replace your lead to the mains with one that can handle 230 volt.
Answer 5 :
Definitely get a universal travel adapter in order to be able to use your laptop connected to electric sockets in France. Make sure to take your laptop with you on board when flying. As someone already mentioned here, you will be required to take it out of the bag at airport security controls. For the long trip, you can put your own music and entertainment to your hard drive. In that case, headphones will definitely come in handy :) There are many many WiFi hotspots in France, some with free Internet access (e.g. many McDonald's in Paris, some hotels). French people usually have long lunches, so if you leave your laptop in a meeting room during lunch, just in case, get a laptop lock.

Can i use a dual wattage converter for a laptop?
can i use a dual wattage converter for a laptop?
i'm going back to america for the holidays, and i want to bring my laptop along, but the plugs and sutff are different there, than here in France! i have a dual wattage converter that converts small things and big things small things - 50watts big things -1600 watts, like straighteners so can i use that for my laptop?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The current your laptop will require is between 110v and 230v then there is the 50~ or 60~ I have looked at all my power supplies for the laptops I run and they all have the current rating of 100 to 240 volt and are 50/60~ so they can work in just about any country you care to name. Look at your PSU and see what the current (in) is marked at if it is 100 to 240v 50/60~ then all you will require to get is a plug converter so that your plug on your PSU will fit the sockets in the country you are going to
Answer 2 :
Most laptops power packs range is 100 to 250 volt, 50 to 60 hz. You do not need a converter in the US since the power here is 120v 60 hz. The outlets have 2 parallel slots. You might need an adapter for the plug only.

I am flying from LAX to France and was wondering if Air France Planes normally have plugs so that I can keep my laptop charged. Thanks!

YES
Answer 2 :
no they don't but if you are frying business class with them, then you can charge your laptop in their business class lounges.
Answer 3 :
if you want outlets then you will have to have something higher than a economy class seat because they dont have them for the economy class, but for the buissness-first class would probably, and you can also call the airlines and ask them, they may tell you different things for what type of plane you will be riding on.

I can't get on my flight or do I have to do it?
Will Air France adjust my flight listing at the airport if I can't get on my flight or do I have to do it?
I am flying Nonrev (standby) on Air France next week and I do not have a laptop. Will the gate agent adjust my listing to the next flight for me if I do not get on my flight due to space not being available or do I HAVE to do it over their flight listing website? I do not have a laptop, that is why I am asking.
Air Travel - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You will have to be at the airport staying in contact with the gate agents for status. When I fly I see the people get there as soon as they can, there can be others attempting standby too. Then Ive notice the gate attendants keep track with those passengers verbally about thier status. Even if you had a laptop, you would still need to be at the airport, you need to inform them of your intents.
Answer 2 :
They'll take care of it, if you ask them to politely. It's a simple transaction to cancel a flight segment in an existing reservation and replace it with a new one. I can do it in 6 seconds with just two computer entries!

How do I make the most of my stay in France as an exchange student?
How do I make the most of my stay in France as an exchange student?
I am 16 years old, and currently living in France for 6 months with a host family. I go to art class once a week, go jogging, and hang out with friends, but I still find myself with a lot of free time at the house. Often everyone in the house is working or occupied so I just end up on my laptop doing unproductive things. I feel like I'm wasting a good opportunity. How should I spend my time? What should I be doing? Thanks!! :]

Get out and meet the local and practice your French.
Answer 2 :
What do you like? Do you like museums? Architecture? Food? Spas? Nature scenery? Medieval towns? Theater? Classical music? Rock music? France has all of this. You should go to a coffee shop and have a drink. Also do you like chocolate hazelnut cream cake? It is called Gateau Noisette. I also recommend Opera Torte and Rhubarb Apple torte. Please go to a French pastry shop! :)

Thanks!! :]

What do you like? Do you like museums? Architecture? Food? Spas? Nature scenery? Medieval towns? Theater? Classical music? Rock music? France has all of this. What type of power outlets are used in Greece, France & Italy?
What type of power outlets are used in Greece, France & Italy?
I'm going backpacking through Greece, France, and Italy this December, and I have a lot of electrical things to take with me, such as: Cell phone iPod touch sony laptop shaving machine camera So what type of plugs should I be taking with me? Thanks.

Answer 1 :
Buy a universal travel adaptor pack. Must of Europe uses round 2 and 3 plug outlets.
Answer 2 :
All use the standard "Europlug" two pin arrangement, which all your devices should be able to use the same sort of adapter for. They differ in grounding though, if you need that. A good bit of Europe uses the Shucko style, which has a contact ground on the top and bottom of the receptacle. France and Belguim have a male earthing prong on their receptacle. Itally just uses an extra hole between the two power prongs. You should make sure your equipment is 230V capable though. If not, you need a converter transformer.
Answer 3 :
The ones below are for Italy which are the same in Greece and France I believe.

Are outlets different in France than in America?
Are outlets different in France than in America?
I am going to France and we are going to stay in a hotel. Do I need to buy a different charger for my phone and laptop?
Other - France - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
yes you do and the voltage is different too its 230/240 volts i believe
Answer 2 :
yes, electrical outlets and current are different. You need to buy an adapter at least
Answer 3 :
Yes.. http://www.francetravelplanner.com/assets/details/outlet_fr6509.jpg
Answer 4 :
YUP! You'll need to buy an adapter. You can find one cheaply at a drug/convenience store when you get there, which would be easier to find. They do sell adapters in America (sometimes gadgets come with adapters that your tempted to throw out) but YOU WILL need to get an adapted because their outlets are completely different. Also, their keyboards are completely different in france. So if you end up using a computer at the hotel or somewhere in the country, you might struggle with typing. Safe travels! :)
Answer 5 :
Hey there, The plugs are different in France (and the rest of Europe, for that matter), so you will need to purchase a plug adapter. However, almost all modern electronics can work 110-240 volts, so there is no need for a transformer, but I advise you to check the appliance label! Hope this helped, JPJ
Answer 6 :
Yep, absolutely. I would suggest you use a converter and adapter like this one: http://www.topmic.com/141-0703.html Its what I use when I travel, works great and efficiently. It converts power and is an adapter as well. Best of luck.

I use to get wireless internet access in France, such as wifi?
What equipment should I use to get wireless internet access in France, such as wifi?
For example, if I get a laptop that has 802.11a/g/draft-n, will that work everywhere here in the US and in France?

Answer 1 :
WiFi is just a name for the 802.11 wireless protocol. 802.11a/b/g are universal. 802.11n isn't. So a stock laptop should work anywhere in the World.

Excise duty for a laptop I will be taking to UK?
excise duty for a laptop I will be taking to UK?
I am visiting a friend in UK. We are both meeting first in Switzerland, then going to France and from there to London (where he lives). I am planning to take a laptop to him as a gift. What customs duty will I have to pay? I am assuming in the Schengen zone, I don't have to pay any and just say that it's for my personal use but when I enter UK, I have to tell it's for him.

Answer 1 :
Personally, I'd just take it out of its box, put it in a bag and walk through customs; you'll be one of thousands walking through with a laptop! France is in the EU, so if you buy there you should be able to just walk through anyway.

What adapters will I need to use in France and London for American electronics?
I'm traveling to France and possibly London for six weeks this summer and want to be able to use and charge the following: laptop, curling iron, hair dryer, radio/alarm clock, and cell phone. What kind of adapter do I need and where can I find one that is relatively inexpensive?

Answer 1 :
Some of your appliances may be dual voltage and will say 110-120V/220-240V. In the US, the voltage is 110-120V In both the UK and France (and Western Europe) the voltage is 220-240V. If your appliance is not dual voltage (110-120V only), you will FRY your appliance beyond repair if you try to use it without a convertor. A convertor is NOT the same as an adaptor. A convertor actually converts the 220-240V to 110-120V. The adaptor refers to the "prongs" (flat in the US as you know). The adaptor does not convert voltage; it just allows you to plug in the device. In France (and most of western Europe), the two prongs are round. In the UK, the adaptor looks kind of clunky and has three large prongs. You can find convertors/adaptors in the luggage section of some Target stores. Radio Shack and some hardware stores in some big cities carry em too. You should buy these in the US before you go. Warning: many of the travel convertors are intended to be used briefly (seconds to minutes) and continuous use will burn them out. Also, bc the cycles (measured in hertz) are different in Europe and the US, US clocks will not run properly even with a convertor. Consider getting a battery operated travel alarm clock in the US before you go. Bon voyage!
Answer 2 :
I am orginally from the US, currently living in London, and have traveled to France since taking up residence in the UK. I am virtually an expert on this matter, seeing how why husband and I have blown many fuses & broken many circuits in trying to figure all of this electrial stuff out. Long story short, here is what you need to know: First things first, the voltage is the same in both the UK and France, however the outlets are different. In the UK the outlets are 3-pronged, and in the France they are two-pronged. Thus, you will essentially need a US -> UK/Europe voltage converter, a US -> UK adaptor, a US -> Europe adaptor, and then depending upon the prong situation on your converter, you might need an additional adaptor (for example, if the converter is made to fit a UK outlet, you will also need a UK -> Europe adaptor to be able to use it while in France). And then here is how you will use everything: For your laptop: Your laptop most likely has an converter already built into it, so all you need is a US -> UK adaptor & a US -> Europe adaptor in order to use it in the two countries. Just double check with the manufacturer of your laptop (I have a VERY old Dell, yet even mine still had the converter built in) Curling iron/hair dryer: Since the voltage is too high for even an adpator, you will need to buy new ones that are made specifically for the UK/Europe..I was rather attached to my US curling iron, and tried so many different things in order to get it to work here in the UK, yet I eventally had to give up. I was replacing converter fuses daily. Radio/alarm, cell phone: you will need to get a US -> UK/Europe converter, and then any adaptors that might be necessary to use the converter in both the UK and France (see above where I talk about the number of prongs on the adaptor) Hope this isn't too confusing! If only these things were universal, life would be so much easier...& I wouldn't have to go without my favorite curling iron :(...Enjoy your trip. How much is my laptop costing me in electricity roughly?
How much is my laptop costing me in electricity roughly?
I've just moved to France for a 9-month placement. I'm being charged a 50 euros a month limit on electricity and anything extra comes out of my deposit. My laptop is a little old and doesn't work without being plugged into the wall (about 10 mins of battery life unplugged). I have it plugged in for roughly 5 hours a day. Any idea what this will be costing me on average?

Answer 1 :
look at the input amperage multiply that by 100 example 2 amp input x 100 = 200 watts usually an hour that is its consumes then check your bill for kilowatt usage price and divide by 100 that is the dollar amount it uses an hour (you need to know how much you are charged for that kilowatt it says somewhere on the bill)
Answer 2 :
Before you can answer that question accuratly ,you will need to know how much the power company charges per killowatt. that is how we in the US are billled. i guess it is the same in France. you need to find out. where i live i pay about 15 cents. but you might pay more or less cents in France, so i dont know. they use nuclear power so it might be less. then you can use one of the calculators you will find in the links below to estimate your cost. ( # of hours you use it ) x ( watts rating of your comp ) x( cost of elec ) but im just GUESSING your lap top wil cost you $5 US a month if you use it a lot. plus ,if you study the links you learn what other appliances cost to run as well. Then you will be more educated on the subject and know more about it than most people do. Have fun. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=cost%20to%20run%20appliances

My laptop is only reading DVDs from Europe
My laptop is only reading DVDs from Europe, how can I make it read american DVD?
Explanation: I have a US laptop but I went to France for several months. I saw french DVDs and now, it's impossible to read american DVDs. I have a DVD writer plugged in to my laptop so I play american DVDs on it. The problem is that I want to sell my laptop now (in USA) and people will want the ability to see american DVDs without the DVD writer, so what can I do?

Answer 1 :
mail me
Answer 2 :
See if your DVD playback software has a setting to change it to Region 1.
Answer 3 :
France and western Europe has a region 2 setting USA and Canada has a region 1 setting so change you setting on you d v d player to region 1
Answer 4 :
DVD has REGION code imbedded US and Canada is REGION 1 Your laptop DVD player was built to read all region code However - due to "Holywood"'s rule, movies are released one by one in each region (pls do not ask me why) So the maker of DVD player need to follow this rule and allow you to read only maximum 3 times DVDs for a foreign country, after that you have to decide, which country are you really from. So now yr computer DVD player assumed that you are a "French" person and refused to play American DVDs What you should do: call your PC help desk and ask how to revert your DVD player back to the olde USA region

Laptops and internet service in France?
Laptops and internet service in France?
Well I live in California and I was wondering if I took my laptop with me to France, would it be possible that I will be able to get a connection from, perhaps, a local cafe? Or even in someone's home if they have internet service? Something like getting service in a Starbucks. I really hope that its possible that I would be able to get connection, but if I dont I'll understand because the whole French internet connection thing might be different than in the US. Anybody has any experiences with an issue like this?

You are lucky, McDonalds has just installed free and unlimited wifi in all of their locations in France. Now all you have to do is to get your favorite McDo meal and use their wifi as long as you like.
Answer 2 :
Hi, All Starbucks and MacDonalds offer free wifi, as do some cafés in Paris. Lots of people now have wifi ... I can pick up 9 networks from my house alone. Not sure about outside of Paris though.
Answer 3 :
You have plenty of wifi around, some of it free, offered either by the shops like the Mc Donalds or in tourist information centres. You also have internet cafés. Just google Internet café plus the name of the city and you'll come up with plenty of addresses. If you are staying in a hotel you might ask before booking if they have an internet connection. There's no difference between French and American connection.
