do i need some kind of plan for my laptop to use wifi in europe?
I'm going to Ireland, UK and France next month...and someone was mentioning data plans for your LAPTOP...do i really need that? In my books it said that there are plenty of wifi spots in cafes and hostels and stuff like that in europe...can't i just connect to those providers? Or do i need some kind of international internet plan? Couldn't reach anyone who could answer me on this.

Answer 1 :
First off, Wireless cards (WIFI) on laptops cannot receive internet through cell phone data plans. You are talking about 2 different things. WIFI is from a Wireless router (usually) that your laptop can use when you connect to the router. (think wifi spots in cafes, starbucks, etc) Data plans are used when you plug a data receiver into your USB port that reads Cell phone signals. In this way you would buy it from a cellphone provider and use their data services like your cell phone would. These are 2 seperate things, which make your question... null.
Answer 2 :
There are a lot of free wi fi spots all over where you are traveling. If you need a constant connection go to any phone store once you get to wherever you are traveling to and you can buy a prepaid data usb device. I suggest if you absolutely do not need a laptop, go with an iPad or iPod touch, you can do all your emailing, skyping, gaming in a lot more portable package. Less of a problem if the thing gets damaged or stolen.

Buying laptop in another country and get it mailed?
Buying laptop in another country and get it mailed?
Hello, I'm living in France now and I'm searching for a nice laptop, and the best that has come up to me is one hp model that's only sold in the U.S. Much much better than the French models priced in euro...I want to order and deliver one to my friends in the U.S. and have them ship it for me, but worry that it might be illegal and cause trouble for them. Please help me reach a solution. Thanks a lot.

It's perfectly legal to ship internationally as long as you pay the postage. One thing that I would make sure to check though is the voltage rating.

Answer 1 :
If you could find the information on-line (it is there) just give them a phone call. AF will give you the correct answer.
Answer 2 :
don't worry about the carry on weight, it's the size that matters, they are usually pretty good about it on international flights. You maybe a little over on checked baggage, but again they are usually a bit flex on it. If you do get a problem, move some weight around between your carry on an checked baggage.
Answer 3 :
Your carry on weight shouldnt be a problem....the only rule is that if you were to put it in the overhead compartment you alone have to do it - you cant aska flight attendent to ask you. (Dont ask why, but Ive been yelled at when I was moving to and from Geneva). As for the the baggage itself, it needs to be 50 pounds(20 kg) or less...otherwise you pay 50$ if its over weight.
