who should I contact to know if I need to pay taxes to import my laptop by DHL from France to USA?
this is my laptop. It is in france. I need it here in the US. I thought having it mailed to me by DHL. Should I pay taxes ? if yes where should I ask ?

Ask DHL. They have experts that can help you with all the documentation that you'll need to get it to the US, and they will know which forms you have to fill out - plus fill them out for you if necessary.

Contact US Customs. While the carrier may be able to estimate the duty, the Customs Service has the final say.

If it is your laptop, you should not pay import taxes. Import taxes are only paid when there is a commercial transaction involved.

Will I be able to use my laptop work while visiting in France and England I should have mentioned this, I meant electrically. Will the laptop work with European power.

i think they will if you mean airplane. but some domestic flights dont. last time i visited they allowed me on the plan

Yes, they will work here. The power supply that comes with the computer should already accept either the North American 110V or the 220V common here in Europe. Look at the label. It should say something like 100 - 240 Vac, 50/60 Hz. for the inputs. This says it will work with either voltage. What you do need is the plug adapter that converts from the US plug standard (two flat prongs) to the European standard (two round prongs) or the UK standard. The one that works in France will also work in most of the rest of Europe (such as here in Italy). You need a separate one for the UK though. You can get the adapters at Target, Brookstones, luggage stores, airport shops, Radio Shack, ... they're widely available. I have several laptops purchased in the US that I use here. However, you should consider whether you really want to bring your laptop. If you're coming for work or moving here, it's necessary. If you're coming for a short vacation (especially if you're moving around a lot), there are public internet places widely available in Europe. Your laptop would be just extra weight and a target for theft.

Should I buy a laptop or go to France for a week?
I really want a laptop that can run WoW and other games, because the one I have now barely handles it. But if I get that laptop, it will be difficult to get enough money to go to France. What should I do?

Let's see, you're basically asking France or WoW. Decide how much of an antisocial nerd you are, and you'll have your answer. WoW will be there forever, but going to France is a once in a lifetime chance. Especially with the way airfares are down right now due to the economy and all.

I would go to France. It is a once in a lifetime experience. It depends on how long you are staying. If it is for a month, compared to a week, it is totally worth it. The culture is great and the food is better. I went there and I'll never forget it.

If France is a once in a lifetime thing and you can never go again, go to France! But you will get more out of a laptop and if WoW is really that important to you get the laptop. France will be there next month, year, or whenever unless you are going on a honeymoon now so that, hopefully, you will not be doing it again soon. If you put off the computer, you will miss a year of use you cannot get back. If you get the computer you can use it until you go and have it with you if you want. If you go to France first, you will not have the new laptop until however long it takes after you get back to save for it. I will not criticize your desire to see France instead of a place with, possibly honest, polite people who will welcome you and your money instead of just your money.
