Answer 1 :
not sure about that but make sure that you bring a power converter because the power is different if you are coming from the US or Canada.
Answer 2 :
Depends on if the hotel that you stay at has WiFi or provides internet service.
Answer 3 :
as long as there is a hot spot, like in a coffee shop, you'll be able to connect. just change your wireless connection settings to connect to them. go to your wireless settings in the bottom right hand corner, by double clicking, and just select whom you want to connect to.
Answer 4 :
If you will be trying to connect with a modem by a phone line, check to see if there is a french driver for the modem. As the dial tone in most European countries sounds different then in the US, your modem may not recognize the sound and could insist no phone line is present.
Answer 5 :
i wouldn't go to france, first of all. but since you are going, a power converter might not be a bad idea. you never know how backasswards their supplies are. otherwise, i don't think you need to worry. I believe the standards are the same world wide.

Using my laptop in France. Help, please.?
Using my laptop in France. Help, please.?
this should be a simple question for people who know. I'm sorry if the answer is already in Yahoo! Answers. I can't exactly find it. I am going to France for a couple of weeks. I've gone many times before, but never taken my laptop. I used my iPhone last time and my bill was outrageous when I got back, even thought I bought some data plan they told me would cover up to a zillion GB. Whatever. If I find a wifi hot spot in France (secured or unsecured and password provided), do I just get on the same way I would in the US? My friend who lives there tells me a relative 2 cottages down has wifi that I can access when I am at her home. She would be too kind to mention if I were costing any fees. Is it possible someone might have a limit on their wifi and I would be costing them money by using lots of data time (you see how little I know about these things?)? Maybe I am overthinking this. Do I just show up with my laptop and connect to hotspots like I do in the US?

A hot spot in France works the same way as it does in the US, if your friend has a download limit, that could be an extra charge, just like in the US. Best advice I can give, is don't stream any movies or Albums, you tube and single songs should be OK. The only way to know what someone's internet plan is, is to ask the bill payer as all hotspots look the same.
