Can I ship a laptop to France and will I be able to use it there?

Can I ship a laptop to France and will I be able to use it there?
Is it legal to ship a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop via Federal Express to France from the United states? I've heard that there are regulations about exporting technology, but I would think that France would have caught up to my five year-old computer by now. Also, assuming it is legal to ship the laptop there, will I be able to use it given the differences in power outlets? Would I just need a different external adapter, or would I need a new internal power supply too? Bonus: If you link me to somewhere where I can buy any new parts that I would need to use my laptop in France, I will be very likely select your answer.

Answer 1 :
Most power supplies are dual voltage so all you need is the outlet adapter which you can get at most electronic stores or even wal-mart. Just look on the power supply and if it says input 100-240v (or thereabouts) then you're ok. For personal use, you can take it with you to France. You can't export for resale purposes.

Ship laptop from US to France?

Ship laptop from US to France?
Hi, I am selling a used laptop on eBay in US and i had a buyer who bought the same over eBay. He is currently in France and wants me to ship it there. I checked the shipping rates and USPS is offering around $50 to ship the item from US to France I want to know if there would be any additional custom/import duty/fees for the buyer to receive the laptop in France ? Will there be much hassles for the buyer to collect the laptop in France ? I will ship it ONLY when i receive the confirmed payment and its through Paypal, so i am safe in that. Please advise if you have had a similar experience

Answer 1 :
eBay now requires you to list IN your description that Customs Fees are the responsibility of the buyer. Write the buyer, and explain this to him. It is not your problem, it is his, and he should know this. Be sure to get insurance on the shipment.

I'm going backpacking in France and Italy this summer - should I bring my laptop?

I'm going backpacking in France and Italy this summer - should I bring my laptop?
Or will the laptop just become something to worry about that weighs down my pack?

Answer 1 :
It will only get stolen. Why do you need it? Check your email when you pass a town with an Internet cafe.
Answer 2 :
Eh. 4 the plain maybe. but ur going to see the sights and u dont need a laptop. take pictures. have fun... i'll be in Italy too this summer!
Answer 3 :
if you do then there is a chance it will get stolen but at the same time you can stay connected with ur friends it depends on how long youll b gone
Answer 4 :
no, dont bring it , just dead weight and worry
Answer 5 :
Basically, I agree with all the other answerers -- except that I took mine with me on a camping trip to France last year, because I was taking lots of photos and I wanted to download and review them as I went. But you could always upload them to a Photobucket account from an internet cafe, assuming you bring your camera's USB cable... I also did watch films tucked up in my tent at night, which was neat, but that's not really a good enough excuse on its own, is it? =D All in all, I vote for leaving the laptop at home: it'll weigh on your mind as much as on your back.
Answer 6 :
Leave it at home. Would you bring a portable tv to the Grand Canyon?

Plugging a laptop into a power outlet in France?

Plugging a laptop into a power outlet in France?
I just got an international converter set but I'm afraid it won't be of help because it says not to use it with appliances that use more than 25 W. The set has five different adapters (for Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia...) and a converter. Can I just use the adapter without the converter? Thanks. It really says "DO NOT USE converter for computers, televisions, fax machines, power tools or electronic controlled appliances exceeding 25 watts." It doesn't say anything about not using the adapters.

Answer 1 :
I wouldn't. The converter converts the charge so you won't have a problem with the higher amount of electricity. I have a friend who plugged in her charger for her camera without that converter and she shut off power in the hallway and she totally fried her charger. I wouldn't suggest doing that unless you want a fried laptop. I'd suggest going to internet cafes instead because they're cheap, often 1-2 euros an hour and the connection is fast.
Answer 2 :
Most laptops don't need a converter, just an adapter. Check your laptop AC adapter for the following mention: Input: 100-240V~ This means it will work anywhere with the correct "plug". Same goes for mp3 players.
Answer 3 :
You just need the adapter to be able to stick your flat two-prong US plug into the round two-prong French outlet. Your laptop AC adapter will take care of the 110V (US) to 210V (French) voltage conversion. You can actually check your adapter input rating; it should indicate something like "110-220V, 50/60Hz".
