Are there taxes/duties on items sent to France through Amazon.fr?

Are there taxes/duties on items sent to France through Amazon.fr?
Hello, If I wish to purchase and ship an item to France, Toulouse through the Amazon.fr website AMAZON EU SARL LUXEMBOURG FR. The item is a laptop priced near 250 euros. I will instruct the Amazon store to wrap it as a gift. It will be sent directly from Amazon store, does the recipient pay anything to pick-up this item? Duties, taxes, etc..? Reason for asking: I am not a France citizen so I do not know the rules! Thank you.

Answer 1 :
If the goods are shipped from within the EU (Luxembourg is a member state) then there are no duties or additional VAT due. Your citizenship does not matter. All that matters is the origin and destination of the shipment.
Answer 2 :
From what you have described there would be no cost to the recipient at point of pick up.

Using my US Laptop in Spain and UK?

Using my US Laptop in Spain and UK?
I expect to stay in Spain for 4 months and also travel to other European countries (U.K., Italy and France). I am concerned about being able to the Lenovo Thinkpad that I got recently. I know that Spain and most of Europe operate at 220 volts and I may need a transformer to use personal appliances like electric hair dryers, shavers etc. I am looking for specific suggestions from expats who have lived in Spain. Thanks for your insights.

My laptop shuts down randomly when I travel abroad?

My laptop shuts down randomly when I travel abroad?
I'm in France with an American laptop and it shuts down at random times (around an hour or so), no warning or anything. Just turns off - a problem I never had in the States. I'm not supposed to have to use a converter because it's rated for 120/240 V. I live in an older building (1800's built) and maybe it's not good for surge protection or something? Also my sister's laptop battery which we just bought last Christmas is completely dead. Could it be the same kind of problem?

Answer 1 :
You're not saying what laptop you have or the make of the battery/power system so this is only a generic answer: You might need to buy a converter, France is 220-240 V at 50 Hz, check what Hz is your computer. The age of the building should not have anything to do with it as long as the electricity system is regularly updated (I lived in a 1600's building without a hitch or a computer hiccup for years). If you have an old system you might want to buy a surge protector, small variations can make your computer shut down or burn out your battery. As well, the quality of your power system / battery can be the source of the problem, a cheap one will not be able to handle the difference and will get your computer to shut down or burn out your battery.
