Is it safe to fly to France with my camera and laptop?

Yes it is. They should be safe in checked baggage or if you would like it can be carry-on. There should be no worries. Do not travel with multiple laptops if you can, they may charge duty or decline multiple units entry.

I always travel with camera and laptop, you should get a case for extra padding to protect your gadgets.

Yes, it is, but I would never put something valuable like a laptop or a good camera in checked baggage. I fly between the US and Europe fairly frequently and have never had any problem with either. If it's a personal, rather than a business trip, I would normally leave the laptop at home though. It's generally pretty easy to find internet access throughout Europe so leaving the laptop is one less thing to lug around in transit. I always have at least one camera with me where ever I go.
